Worldwide Holdings Berhad (WHB) Celebrates World Environment Day with Enviro Hunt 2024
Puchong, Malaysia – In celebration of World Environment Day 2024, Worldwide Holdings Berhad (WHB), through its Environment Division, Worldwide Environment, organized an engaging and educational event named Enviro Hunt on 29th June 2024.
The event, held at the Worldwide Landfills (WLP) Recreational Park in Air Hitam, Puchong, aimed to educate participants on the latest trends and innovations in solid waste management. WHB Group Chief Executive Officer, Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria, highlighted the significance of the program, emphasizing its dual purpose of promoting environmental education and encouraging healthy recreational activities.
“This healthy activity indirectly promotes recreational use of the WLP, a well-maintained area and one of WHB’s leading corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects, conducted in collaboration with the Selangor state government,” stated Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria.
The WLP Recreational Park, Malaysia’s first landfill rehabilitation project, was completed in 2010. It transformed the Air Hitam Sanitary Landfill, the country’s first engineered landfill, into a vibrant recreational park. The project earned recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records in 2011 as the first site in Malaysia equipped with a power plant generating energy from solid waste.
“To date, treatment activities continue at WLP by WHB, particularly focusing on leachate and landfill gas components, ensuring the longevity and sustainability of the site and its surroundings,” Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria added.
The Enviro Hunt 2024 saw enthusiastic participation from about 200 representatives from local authorities (PBT), Selangor and Federal government agencies, the surrounding community, and the media. Participants competed in two categories: open and staff, navigating through several ‘checkpoints’ in the WLP, which boasts a five-kilometer jogging track, a bike track, and a playground.
Participants were also tasked with completing various environmentally themed activities, raising awareness about sustainability and best practices in solid waste management. A recycling counter was set up throughout the program, allowing participants and the nearby community to bring various types of recyclable waste and exchange them for cash.
“We thank all participants, who are our stakeholders, especially local authorities and government agencies, the community, and the media,” said Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria. “WHB has led the environmental management sector in Selangor for over 30 years, and this initiative strengthens our aspiration to promote a greener and healthier lifestyle within the community.”
Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria expressed her excitement over the encouraging response to the Enviro Hunt, noting that it demonstrates WHB’s commitment to environmental care and emphasizes the importance of ESG principles in their operations.
